Signed to APF Records on Halloween last year Merseyside’s Horror quintet Video Nasties unearth their debut album “Dominion” on Friday 13th
Since 2017, something has been lurking in the shadows, snarling from the unseen corners with a piercing horror-metal atmosphere; that something is Video Nasties, and they’re ready to strike with their moral-panic inducing heaviness ready for their slasher soundtrack to rip your eardrums to pieces.
For example, the intro to the first track “Stay Gold” which combines the loading of an ’80s 8-bit home computer mixed in a trailer style narration chiming bells n all then the riffs begin which is also true of “Hanging Tree” which was released as a single. Straight into “Helvetica” not to be confused with the font grabs your attention immediately, my favorite three songs from the album are next ” Transvoltum” “Red of Night” & “Viva Death” if I had to pick one out of the three as my stand-alone favourite it would have to be “Viva Death“
You would think that with a title like “Drone Eagle” the pace would slow but that isn’t the case but the middle section of the track has a real 90’s metal feel to it & to someone who is entering his fourth decade I do enjoy hearing snippets of things that I had on repeat in my teenage years the same could be said for the next track “Stabbing Nightmare” before even getting to this point I already know the album is going back on immediately.
The penultimate and Instrumental title track “Dominion” can only be described as creepy 8-bit which would have easily worked in something like Splatterhouse. Lastly, if ever there was another Freddy vs Jason movie “They Rise” would have to be on on the soundtrack also it’s catchy as hell.
Speaking on the album the bassist Rick adds, ‘There’s a lot of John Carpenter worship on Dominion. All of his scores are amazing. We tried to capture that same 80s Carpenter vibe with a lot of the melodies on the album. If you imagine taking Sepultura, Carcass and Entombed as main influence and then lacing it with the hooks of John Carpenter, The Cure, The Cult… Killing Joke etc. even through to the likes of Dead Kennedys and T.S.O.L. Big post-punk, goth, rock influences in there.’
If you have albums that you play every Friday 13th Dominion needs to be placed blood-splattered right at the top of the pile
