The Welsh Doomsters return with the final part of their trilogy – Yn Ol Annwn.
Yn Ol I Annwn’, Welsh for ‘Return To The Underworld’, is the third part of a trilogy of albums from Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard that began with ‘Noeth Ac Anoeth’ in 2015 and 2017’s ‘Y Proffwyd Dwyll’
2017 was around the time I discovered Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard and living in Cardiff at the time I even had the opportunity to see them live and in between completing the last part of the trilogy even found time to record a split EP ‘Totems‘ with Slomatics.
This album has a slower, space rock feel to it but still maintains crushing riffs attributed to the previous releases. The album starts off with the instrumental ‘Tralfamadore‘ into ‘The Spaceships Of Ezekiel’ which is based on the book of the same name. Already at this point, I am invested in this album as a former bookseller and bookworm I love to see literature used as an influence music & then BOOM !! hands down my favorite track of the album ‘Fata Morgana‘ this is the point where I want to talk about Jessica’s vocals on this album they perfectly glide through everything more assured & melancholy as ever.
Sweeping in just as hauntingly is ‘Du Bist Jetzt Nicht in der Zukunft‘
(You are not in the future now) into to the title track ‘Yn Ol
And after it ends you could easily immediately play this through again and listen to the 8 tracks, each one unique in their own right demanding your attention again & again.
Not only do I love the direction the band have taken in completing this trilogy but to hear how much they have crafted their sound and hugely developed it makes me excited for what’s next, so, it’s no surprise that this get 5 out 5 skulls but, these skulls have been shoved into a rocket, blasted off through a vortex, covered in spacey doom particles and crash landed on a rocky isolated planet.
